Day 5 - Cannon Beach

We are toasty warm all night long and sleep well. Bill is up first and steps out into heavy, cold, wet fog. Everything in the campsite is drenched! Undaunted, bacon and pancakes for breakfast.

(Kay here:) We hit the road in search of sun and Cannon Beach. (When driving we have been listening to a read-aloud book I borrowed from the library---The Time in Between, by David Bergen--seven CD`s worth, and it`s riveting).

Cannon Beach is an upscale tourist (no McDonalds etc) with flowers flourishing everywhere you look. (Bill:) It is very well to do, a controlled community development area, worth revisiting sometime in future for a long weekend stay. Beautiful flowers everywhere.

We biked on the beach (on the hard, damp sand) and marvelled at the Haystack Rock.

I had oysters for lunch; Bill had a crab melt. Then, we spent some time at the library, getting tickets to Shakespeare at Ashland, and booking a hotel for Saturday night. It was quite a process that Bill handled beautifully.

We returned to our ocean-side campsite and cooked dinner--pork chops and corn. Then, these nice people we met (she was admiring Bill`s kite-flying skills on the beach), Dollie and Bill, from Langley, BC, invited us to their campsite for a glass of wine for a second visit. They have an RV, and their location was a little more sheltered, so we enjoyed their campfire. It`s funny how camping and a fire and a glass of wine can cause people to share parts of their lives openly and freely. We came away feeling that we`d found some friends and exchanged e-mails.

We crawled into our mummy bags and little tent, and slept well.

  1. Sounds like a great trip for you guys, nothing compares to getting out of a tent for freshly brewed coffee.
Dad's always been good with kites... did you guys bring the kite?

  2. The kite is a reliable old standby I have had for years. Tough and up to the steady 30k wind on the coastal beaches. Not fancy but easy to fly. I agree about the coffee. Nothing like a strong, hot cup of coffee on a cold morning standing in your fleece... with the sizzle and aroma of bacon cooking in the pan. I totally agree with Diane about getting a collapsible "Sunshade" with zip up bug screen curtains to cover the picnic table is a great idea. Next year's addition.
