We were on the road by 9AM, coffee and breakfast to go, fantastic weather. We looked at the gas and pressed the "KM left" button - 68K. Would that get us over the border and to Bellingham for cheaper gas? Let's go for it.
The border was a 40 MINUTE wait - for some - NOT us - with Nexus - 1 car in front of us and we breezed through - BUT WHY do the border guards have to be so humourless? I guess it is their training. We are all potential terrorists...
Would we make Bellingham? The count down continued...33 K left in the tank...Driving was easy, few cars, mostly CDN's heading south. Another loaded car with gear piled over the windows past us and they even had a roofrack. We have to have one now that we are campers again, but we will not bring more stuff!
Trader Joe's is a US Grocery chain that Kay swears by. Great selection and really interesting choices - WE HAVE to stop in Bellingham. With 5K left in the tank I find a Chevron - all is well. We have a dinner to prepare that night and Kay has stocked up.
Finally, by 10:30 and we are off to Seattle. NOW the race is to get to Seattle before the HOV lanes close. Unfortunately, we don't make it and instead we get a taste of what driving in the Lower Mainland will be like 20 years from now (electric cars) - bumper to bumper and slamming on the brakes as traffic goes from 60MPH to a dead stop when merging traffic chokes the road. This is noon on a Friday.
The driving from Tacoma to Olympia is very tedious and dangerous really, with cars in a very tightly packed mass. 5 LANES both ways! No matter what lane I move into - I'm NOT neurotic - the lane I leave starts to move and the one I enter stops. We arrive at Erm's at about 1:30 and it is like a green paradise!Lunch, uppack, sleep - and a great dinner that night with Scott and Linda (Scott is Kay's older cousin) - Lasagna! We should go to bed early but Fiddler on the Roof comes on at 10PM and we stay up until 1AM - OMG - we are suckers for that movie - thank you Norman Jewison.
